A NORTH Shields dentist has become the first in the region to be awarded an advanced degree in Restorative Dentistry.
Dr Andrew Leys, who works at the Alma Place Dental Practice, is only one of 27 dentists in the country to hold the qualification after successfully completing his studies at Manchester University.

Restorative dentistry is a technique which involves rebuilding badly decayed, damaged, or missing teeth.

Dr Leys, who has been the practice's principle dentist for nine years, explains: "Restorative dentistry brings together all the different dental skills, but the course also gave me excellent training for the confident planning of complex treatment.

"It's always been the type of dentistry I've been interested in.

"I've practised dentistry for over 20 years, but wanted to improve the level at which I work, within this exciting field."

The extra study meant Dr Leys had to spend long periods away from the practice, and had to travel to Manchester on a regular basis to complete the two-year course.

"This diploma has allowed me to extend my knowledge and skills in an ever changing field of dentistry.

"It's been a huge commitment but it's been important to me to be able to offer my patients the best type of treatment they deserve."

Dr Leys will receive his diploma at a special graduation ceremony in London next February.
